A Century of General Strikes
The post-WWI world was rocked by general strikes including Winnipeg (1919), Seattle (1919), and Britain (1926).
General strikes followed in Cuba (1933, 1935), Spain (1951), France (1968), Chile (1972), Quebec (1972), Portugal (1974) Iran (1979), Poland (1982, 2011), Egypt (2008, 2011), and Minneapolis (2026). India takes the world record with general strikes in 2016, 2019, 2020, 2024, 2025, and 2026.
General strikes have challenged ruling classes, toppled tyrants, and deposed governments. However, none have managed to end capitalist rule.
What is the purpose of a general strike? Is it the final goal or can it lay the ground for greater social change?
